If you're setting up your first website, "domain" and "hosting" can sound interchangeable — they're not, and understanding the difference makes the whole setup process much clearer.
Hosting: Where Your Website Actually Lives
Web hosting is the physical/virtual server storage and computing power that actually runs your website's files, database, and any backend code. Without hosting, your website simply doesn't exist anywhere for anyone to visit.
A Domain: Your Website's Address
A domain name (like example.com) is a human-readable address that points to your hosting's server — without it, visitors would need to type a raw IP address to reach your site, which is neither memorable nor professional.
How They Work Together
- You register a domain name through a domain registrar
- You set up hosting (a web hosting plan) somewhere to store your actual website
- You point the domain's DNS records at your hosting server's IP address
- When someone types your domain into a browser, DNS translates it to your hosting server's actual address, and your website loads from there
Do You Need to Buy Both From the Same Company?
No — domains and hosting are technically independent, and it's completely normal to register a domain with one provider and host your website with a different one. You just need to point the domain's DNS settings at wherever your hosting actually lives.
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Buying a domain and assuming a website appears automatically — a domain alone does nothing without hosting behind it
