How to Reset Your VPS Root Password From the Panel

Locked out of SSH — lost your key, forgot a password you set manually, or inherited a VPS from someone else? Every RepublicNodes KVM VPS supports a self-service password reset, no ticket required.

How to Do It

1. Go to your VPS in My Services and open its management page.
2. Find the Password Reset action (usually under a Settings or Actions section, depending on your panel theme).
3. Confirm the reset. The system generates a new root password and applies it directly to the VM.
4. The new password is shown to you immediately — copy it somewhere safe right away, since it's typically only displayed once.

What Actually Happens Under the Hood

This isn't just changing a database field — it genuinely resets the root account's password on the live VM (via the underlying virtualization platform's guest-agent/console tools), so it works even if you can't currently SSH in at all. That's the whole point: it's designed for exactly the "I'm locked out" scenario.

After Resetting

• Log in with ssh [email protected] using the new password.
• Once in, it's worth setting up an SSH key instead of continuing to rely on password auth — see our SSH key guide for the quick setup, even after the VM already exists.
• If you'd rather disable password authentication entirely once a key is working (recommended for anything internet-facing), that's a standard sshd_config edit (PasswordAuthentication no), done from inside the VM itself.

If the Reset Doesn't Seem to Work

• Give it a minute — the reset needs to actually apply to the running guest, which isn't always instantaneous.
• If the VM is powered off, some reset methods need it running first — check the VM's power state and start it if needed.

A Word on Security

Anyone with access to trigger this from your panel account effectively has root on the VM — which is exactly why panel account security (a strong password, 2FA) matters just as much as VM-level security.
