Managed vs Self-Managed Dedicated Servers
The real difference between managed and self-managed (unmanaged) dedicated server hosting, and how to know which one fits your team.
Managed vs Self-Managed Dedicated Servers
Dedicated server hosting generally comes in two flavors: managed, where the host handles ongoing server administration for you, and self-managed (unmanaged), where you get the hardware and full root access, and everything from there is your responsibility.
What Self-Managed Actually Means
With a self-managed dedicated server, the host is responsible for:
- The physical hardware working and being reachable on the network
- Initial OS installation/provisioning
- Physical security and power/network uptime of the data center
Everything above the OS level โ security patching, software installation and configuration, monitoring, backups, troubleshooting application issues โ is on you.
What Managed Adds
A managed dedicated server typically adds host responsibility for some combination of:
- OS-level security updates and patching
- Monitoring and alerting for server health
- Assistance with server configuration and troubleshooting
- Sometimes, application-level support depending on the specific managed tier
Which One Is Actually Right for You?
Self-managed makes sense when:
- You (or your team) have genuine systems administration expertise
- You want maximum control and don't want a host's management layer between you and the hardware
- You're running something specialized enough that generic managed support wouldn't meaningfully help anyway
Managed makes sense when:
- You want dedicated hardware's performance and control without needing in-house sysadmin expertise
- Your team's time is better spent on your actual application than on server maintenance
- You want a support path for infrastructure-level issues instead of handling everything solo
Being Honest About Which One You're Buying
Whichever type you choose, understand clearly what's actually included before you need it โ the worst time to discover a "managed" plan doesn't cover what you assumed is during an actual incident.
