Minecraft Server Backups: How to Back Up and Restore Properly

A backup you've never tested restoring isn't really a backup — it's a hope. Here's how to actually protect a Minecraft server's world and configuration properly.

What to Back Up

• The world folder(s) (world, world_nether, world_the_end, or equivalent names) — this is the irreplaceable part
• The plugins folder, including each plugin's config subfolder — losing plugin configs means redoing hours of setup even if the world survives
• server.properties, whitelist.json, ops.json, banned-players.json, banned-ips.json

How Often to Back Up

• Active survival/SMP servers: daily, at minimum — more often if you have a large, engaged player base making irreplaceable progress
• Before every plugin or version update: always, regardless of your normal schedule — updates are the single most common cause of needing a restore
• Before any manual world edit (WorldEdit operations, manually adding structures, etc.)

Automated vs Manual Backups

Manually copying files is fine occasionally, but it's easy to forget, and doesn't help if you're not around when something goes wrong. Restoring a Backup — Do This Carefully

1. Stop the server first — never restore files while the server is actively writing to them
2. Restore the backup to a separate location first if possible, to confirm it's actually intact before overwriting your live world
3. Restore world files and plugin configs together, matching timestamps — restoring a world from one backup and plugins from a different one can cause data mismatches (a player's balance existing in a plugin's database but their claimed land missing from the restored world, for example)
4. Start the server and verify the world loads cleanly before announcing anything to players

Test Your Backups Occasionally

At least once, actually restore a backup to a fresh test server and confirm it works. Finding out a backup is corrupted or incomplete during a real emergency is far worse than finding out during a routine test.
