Monetizing Your Minecraft Server the Right Way (Mojang ToS-Compliant)

Running a Minecraft server isn't free, and monetizing one to cover (or exceed) hosting costs is common and legitimate — but Mojang's commercial usage guidelines set real limits on what you can actually sell.

What's Allowed

Mojang's guidelines generally permit selling:

• Cosmetic items — particle effects, cosmetic-only pets, name colors/tags, cosmetic armor skins that don't affect gameplay
• Non-gameplay-affecting perks — extra homes, cosmetic-only kits, priority queue access
• In-game currency purchasable for cosmetic-only spending
• Ranks that grant cosmetic or convenience benefits, not competitive advantage

What's Not Allowed

• Pay-to-win mechanics — selling items or stats that give a competitive advantage (better weapons, exclusive gameplay-affecting items, stat boosts)
• Selling access to gameplay content locked behind a paywall that isn't otherwise obtainable through normal play
• Randomized loot boxes/crates with a chance at gameplay-affecting items (cosmetic-only crates are generally fine)

Setting Up a Store

A dedicated web store (often built on Tebex or similar platforms) integrated with your server via a plugin is the standard approach — players purchase through the web store, and the plugin automatically delivers the purchased item/rank in-game without manual work on your end.

Being Transparent With Your Community

Beyond the ToS requirement, being upfront about what money can and can't buy on your server builds trust — a community that believes ranks are "pay-to-win" in disguise, even if technically cosmetic, will still feel that unfairness and may leave.
