Switching Between CS:GO, GMod, and TF2 on One Server
How to swap games on a Source Engine plan without buying a new service.
Switching Between CS:GO, GMod, and TF2 on One Server
Our Source Engine hosting plans support three games on the same underlying product line โ Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Garry's Mod, and Team Fortress 2 โ and you can switch between them without buying a new service.
How It Works
All three run under the same Source Engine nest, so switching is a Game Changer / egg swap operation โ the same mechanism covered in our egg changer guide and game changer overview.
Steps to Switch
- Go to your service's management page and find the Game Changer / Startup section where the game/egg selection lives.
- Select the game you want to switch to (CS:GO, GMod, or TF2).
- Confirm the switch โ the system installs the new game's server files fresh.
- Once installation completes, restart, and configure the new game's startup variables (map, server name, RCON password, etc.) on the Startup tab.
What Happens to Your Old Files
Switching games installs a fresh install of the new game โ your previous game's server files aren't automatically merged in, since CS:GO, GMod, and TF2 are entirely separate codebases with nothing in common to carry over. If you have custom content (a GMod addon folder, custom CS:GO configs) you want to keep, back it up via the File Manager before switching, so you can restore it if you ever switch back.
Why You Might Want to Switch
- Testing which game your community prefers without paying for two separate services while you figure it out.
- Seasonal or rotating game nights โ a GMod server for one event, switched to TF2 for another.
- A GMod server that didn't take off, and you want to try CS:GO instead, without losing your plan's specs or starting a new order.
Specs Stay the Same
Your RAM, CPU, disk, and other plan specs don't change when you switch games โ you're on the same Performance or Budget tier either way, just running different server software on it. A tier sized for CS:GO's lighter footprint will handle GMod or TF2 equally fine, since all three sit in a similar resource range on our plans.
After Switching: Don't Forget Startup Variables
Each game has its own startup variables (map name, game mode, RCON password, workshop collection ID for GMod, etc.) โ these reset to defaults on a fresh install, so review and reconfigure them after every switch rather than assuming settings carried over.
