Glossary of hosting terms

Allocation โ€” an IP address and port assigned to your server. Players connect to it.

Backup โ€” a compressed copy of your server files you can download or keep for safety.

Console โ€” the live text output and command line of your running server.

CPU limit โ€” game plans show CPU as a percentage; 100% is roughly one full core, 200% is two cores.

DDoS protection โ€” network filtering that absorbs floods of junk traffic aimed at your server.

Egg โ€” a template that tells the panel how to install and start a particular game or app.

IPMI โ€” remote management hardware on a dedicated server, used for power control and a remote console.

KVM โ€” the virtualization technology behind a VPS; your resources are isolated from other customers.

NVMe โ€” very fast solid-state storage that makes world loading, saves and databases quicker.

Node โ€” a physical server that hosts many customer servers.

Root access โ€” full administrator control of a VPS or dedicated server.

SFTP โ€” secure file transfer, an alternative to the web file manager.

SRV record โ€” a DNS record that lets players join a Minecraft server with just a hostname, no port.

Subuser โ€” another account you have given limited access to your server.

TPS โ€” ticks per second; a healthy Minecraft server runs at 20.

Uptime โ€” the share of time a service is up and reachable.
